Inferring and Blues in the Schools

This week marks the start of Lent and we will be collecting money for various charities.  You will find the special Lenten activities planned at Holy Redeemer here.

One of my favourite reading strategies is inferring. Today we read the book "Tight Times" and had to use inferences to figure out what was happening throughout the text. We use our inferring skills all the time!

We are lucky to have Blues in the Schools visiting us this week at Holy Redeemer.

Homework

There are no WWW for this week.  We will, however, continue to look at prefixes and how they change the meaning of a word.

Time to Nearest Five Minutes

Our carpet clock

Working on an inquiry problem

Waking up our brains

In Math we are investigating time to the nearest five minutes.  We are reviewing time to half hour and quarter hours as well!.  Here is a great short video that introduces students to telling time to the nearest five minutes:
LearnZillion
I found an awesome interactive clock online too.  You can try it out here for some practice with analogue and digital times.  We also created a large carpet clock and a few anchor charts too!

Week in Review

In Language, we continue to work on inferring and retelling stories.  We watched the video "One Man Band" and stopped throughout the short film by Pixar to use our inferring skills.

Our read aloud for this week was Bear's Loose Tooth.  After the reading, we completed a shared Shape Go Retell together.

In Math, we are working on reviewing time to the half hour and quarter hour.  In Grade Three, we need to be able to tell time to the nearest five minutes.
Last week in Health, we worked on our Safety Posters.  We had the choice of using Google Drawings or a poster using paper.

In Science, we finally finished our Forces unit with a fun STEM activity.  Students had to create a safety device for their egg so that it would survive a 1m drop.  We only had a few eggs that turned into omelettes.  Hosanna suggested that we needed a slow motion edition of the Egg Drop Challenge video from the other day so...here it is!

Happy Birthday, Sayeda! She is our own February birthday.

We took to the outdoors for gym this week.  The weather was glorious and we tried out the ice hills (who needs Jacques Cartier park?).

I hope everyone has a great Family Day on Monday.  Try and get outdoors to enjoy this beautiful weather!

Egg Drop Challenge

Today, we spent the last block making the final touches on our safety devices for our eggs.  Then we had to actually drop them from a height of one metre!  Which eggs survived?  Which ones became yolks?  Take a peek!

Valentine's Day and Important Information

Today was a very busy Valentine's Day at Holy Redeemer.  We played a multiplication bump game, exchanged cards, wrote 'compli-mats' and we had the cake raffle.  Gym was also in there somewhere.  Some of us made heart art. Also, we made virtual Valentine's Day cards using PicCollage and posted it to Seesaw.  Phew!
Students were asked to bring in recycled materials to use for our Egg Drop Challenge.  They will have to create a safety device to protect an egg from dropping from a distance of one metre.  You can bring in newspapers, cups, toilet rolls, foam...pretty much anything that might protect your egg!
On Family Day (this upcoming Monday) Holy Redeemer will be having a Family Fun Day at Funhaven.  A note was sent home but if it got lost...here is the info you need!
There will be a Family Fun Day at Funhaven on Monday, February 20, 2017, all day. When you purchase a Flex Jr. or Fun Flex pass, 25% will go back to the school and will go towards the playground initiative. So let's go have some fun at Funhaven. A letter will be sent home to take with you to Funhaven, or you can use the code word "PLAYGROUND" when purchasing your package. Funhaven is located at 1050 Baxter Road, behind Ikea.

We will also be having a Winter Play Day at Holy Red on Wednesday, February 22nd.  Please make sure to bring in some extra mittens, socks etc. just in case!

There will also be a Movie Night at Holy Trinity on Friday, February 24th.  Information was sent home in the agendas regarding this event.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day and Temperature

For those of you who are handing out Valentine's Day cards...here is our class list...

We have also been investigating temperature this week.  Students need to know benchmarks such as what is a cold day (-25 degrees Celsius) or a hot day (30 degrees Celsius).
