Reconciliation

Some of our friends made the Sacrament of Reconciliation last night in our gym.  They will be preparing to make their First Communion in the spring.

All About Cam, Gym Time and Visualizing

Today our Star of the Week was Cameron! Now we know that his name means MISCHIEF!
Here is his awesome Google Slides Presentation:

We are using our visualizing skills while reading to help us understand what we are reading.  In shared reading, we read the first part of the poem 'Freddie' and drew what we thought Freddie might look like.  Afterwards, we read the rest of the poem and our mental image of changed because...he was a DOG! The reaction, when we found out he was a dog, is hilarious!  We learned that our mental images can change when we read.

Freddie

I don’t like doing homework,
I know that it will bore me.
But now I am much happier
’Cause Freddie does it for me!

He greets me at the door each day
When I come home from school.
He just can’t wait to read my books—
I think that’s pretty cool!

I give him all my homework,
Like history and math.
And when he’s done I give him
A nice warm bubble bath!

My grades are so much better now,
Which makes my parents glad.
Freddie is the smartest dog
That I have ever had!

In gym we are working on our throwing and catching skills!  Check us out!

Family Literacy Day, Two-Digit Addition and Temperature

Today is Family Literacy Day! Get out a good book and read tonight:)
In Math we are exploring temperature and thermometers.  Today we used real thermometers to see what would happen if we put them in ice cold water and hot water.  Lots of good inquiry!

We have been looking at various ways to add BIG numbers.  One way to add up big numbers is by using base ten and regrouping if you have more than 2 digits in the ones place.  Here is a great video to learn this concept:

We also have an anchor chart to help us remember the steps.  We are also learning the W strategy:)

Cake Walk and Quarter Hour

A Cake Walk note was sent home and the tickets officially go on sale tomorrow.  The money raised will go back to the school:)  Tickets are 4 for a $1 and 10 for $2.
In Math, we are exploring time to the quarter hours (quarter past and quarter to), addition with regrouping and temperature. Very busy!
We love to play Stop the Clock and there are lots of other games to be found on the net!  Friends that were all caught up spent some time playing time games and some posted to their blogs.

Visualizing and PJ Day

We are learning about visualizing when we read.  We listened to the story The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey without looking at the pictures.  We had to use our visualization skills to figure out what was going on in the story. Ask your child what visualizing means!
Tomorrow our classes are trying to raise some money for Ryan's Well Foundation.  We have decided to have a class PJ Day in order to support his efforts to bring clean water to underdeveloped countries. You are not obligated to bring in money but every little bit helps!
Some of the girls in our two classes have made a video for the students to watch.  It is called 'Best Friends':)

Telling Time to the Quarter Hour and Matter

We have begun to look at measurement- specifically time to the quarter hour.  Today we reviewed grade one time expectations and then created our own individual clocks. We are pretty good at time to the hour and half hour but need more practice with quarter hour. Here are some videos we watched to help us understand the concept:

In Science, we went on a Matter Hunt and posted to our own blogs.  Ask us the three states of matter!

#OneWord2016, Skating and MLK

Rather than doing a New Year's Resolution this year, we chose a word that would inspire us for the rest of the year.  Here are our One Words...

Today is Martin Luther King day in the United States.  We read the book 'Martin's Big Words' and wrote down our dreams.  We also watched a short video about the life of Martin.  His words tie in nicely to the Gospel Value for this month-Dignity of the Person:)

Skating, Solids, Sebastian and Reconciliation

Our Student of the Week is Sebastian!  Take a look at his Google Slideshow below:

We continue to work on our Reconciliation books in class.  We are learning about forgiveness and being a good friend.  Some of the stories we have read about our The Lost Sheep, The Good Samaritan, Zacchaeus and the Prodigal Son.

Three Billy Goats Gruff and Matter

Today we listened to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and talked about the author's message (we are getting really good at this!).  Tomorrow we will be getting into groups to dramatize the story!

We played Mystery Matter to launch our new science unit- Understanding Matter and Energy- Properties of Liquids and Solids.  Ask your child how to play the game!

Fundamental Concepts Big Ideas
Energy Materials that exist as liquids and solids have specific properties. (Overall expectations 2 and 3)
Matter Liquids and solids interact in different ways. (Overall expectations 2 and 3)
Some liquids and solids can be harmful to us and the environment. (Overall expectations 1 and 2)

Skating on Friday, Graphs, Procedural Writing and Reconciliation

Don't forget to bring your skates and helmet on Friday.  We will be skating at the Minto Rec Complex:)
Today in Math, we finished our success criteria on graphs.  Take a look at all the 'must haves' for a tally chart, bar graph and a pictograph:

In Language, we watched the story of the Gingerbread Man.  Afterwards we wrote a Procedural Text on how to eat a gingerbread cookie.  Our classroom smelled like a ginger bomb had gone off!

A reminder that students who are preparing to make the Sacrament of First Communion will be making their Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday night.  It will take place at 7 pm in our school gym.

Google Hangout with Ryan from Ryan's Well

We were so lucky to speak with Ryan about raising money to build wells in Africa (and other countries too).  Mrs. Denyer's class also joined in on our conversation with him! Check it out here
We also did a shared retell with a partner today after reading the book "Hooway for Wodney Wat".

Ryan's Well

Today, we watched a movie about Ryan Hreljac from Kemptville who raised money to build wells in Africa. He was only six years old when he decided to raise money to build a well in Africa. We are going to Google Hangout or Skype with him on Monday.  After watching a video and reading parts of a book about him, we had a few questions we are going to ask him! For more information about his foundation check out Ryan's Well.

The Epiphany

Dear Jesus, the wise men followed a star in the sky.
It led them to Bethlehem and to you.
Sometimes we follow the wrong things,
and instead of getting closer to you,
we get further from you.
Help us always stay focused on you,
just like the wise men were.
Never allow us to put things in front of us
that will keep our eyes off you.
You are our shining star.
Shine for us so the path to you is always list. Amen.

Library, Reconciliation, Retells and #OneWord

Tomorrow we have library in the Learning Commons.  Please make sure they have been returned:)
The students who are making their First Communion this year will be celebrating their First Reconciliation on Tuesday, January 19 at 7pm  in our gym.

In Language, we continue to work on retelling stories.  Today we read the story 'Squirrel's New Year's Resolution'- a story about a squirrel who thought she didn't have a resolution but actually did!
Here is our Shape Go Map from our retell:

Instead of coming up with a New Year's Resolution, we are joining the #OneWord movement.  We brainstormed words that would inspire us to be the best we could be in 2016.  We came up with a lot of amazing words!  After brainstorming and finding a word just right for us, we began to design our word on cardstock.  Stay tuned for the video that will be created when we are finished!
We listened to this inspiring song by Matthew West while we were creating.

Since we are working on Procedural Writing in Language, I thought everyone might enjoy this video from one of my favourite YouTube channels...KidSnippets:)  Enjoy!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back!  It was tough going for the first five minutes but everyone is back into the routine.  Homework has been sent home and is due on Thursday.
In Math, we continue to explore sorting and graphing in data management.  Today we surveyed our friends about what the ate for their Christmas Dinner.  The choices were: turkey, chicken, ham or other.  We learned that more people chose 'other' than the other choices.  Turkey was the second most popular dinner choice.
In Language, we wrote about our Christmas vacations on our blog and completed a reflection about 2015.
