Take a look at what happens to oil when you add water! What do you notice?
On Friday, we investigated solids that dissolve in water. Some solids seem to 'disappear' (sugar) but are still there if you tasted them (we didn't taste them!). Other solids, like the Froot Loops, did not dissolve and the flour appeared to mix with the water. When I came back to school on Monday, look what happened to the flour. What do you notice?
Today we read a story called 'Ralph Tells a Story'. Nothing ever happens to Ralph. So every day when it's time to write stories, Ralph thinks really hard. He stares at his paper. He stares at the ceiling. But he has no stories! With the help of his classmates, Ralph realizes that a great story can be about something very little...and that maybe he really does have some stories to tell. We laughed so hard when we read this book and came up with some awesome stories that we could write about!
I really like the illustrations!
Here are just a few of the things we thought we could write about! Can't wait to read these stories when they are finished:)
In Math, we continue to investigate Polygons and their properties. We already know quite a lot about polygons as you can see from our anchor chart:
We checked out the grade six Clean Water display in the foyer this morning. Outside the gym there is a 20 L jug of water that many people in the world use to transport water. It was very heavy and we only had to hold it for a few seconds! Many women and children have to walk 5 to 10 k each day just to get water for their family (the water is yucky too!). We listened to the story 'Clean Water for Elirose' and talked about how easy it is for us to have access to clean water. After gym, some kids walked up to the water fountain to take a few sips of our cool and clean water! Easy peasy!
In Canada, we have access to clean water all the time. Not everyone is as lucky as we are!
Hritvik was our MonSTAR of the week and created a wonderful All About Me using Google Slides. Well done, Hritvik!
This week we read the book 'Imagine a Day' and wrote about our own imaginary day. Please watch our book that we made:)
We have been using Google Drawings to create two-dimensional pictures! Woo Hoo!
We are also collecting money for Ryan's Well as part of St.Cecilia's Lenten Project. Please donate a toonie if you can...if we reach our goal...I will dye my hair PURPLE!
Don't forget to use your Dreambox and Raz-Kids accounts to practice your math/reading skills. I will be sending personal messages to people who use them!
The grade six classes are also raising money for Ryan's Well as part of our Lenten Project. Please bring in a loonie or a toonie. If we reach our goal...Mrs. A will colour her hair...PURPLE!
Today we went on a 2D scavenger hunt around the school. We posted to our blogs as well as a padlet wall. Tomorrow we will consolidate and discuss the shapes that we found. I wonder if we remember the names of shapes from grade one?
We also did an experiment in science where we mixed liquids together with water. Can you guess which liquid did NOT mix well with water? I will give you a clue: It spilled on the floor and left a greasy mess!
Yesterday we partnered up to sort some shapes. After we sorted the shapes, we put them on a padlet to share with others. We collaborated well and remembered a lot from grade one. In grade two, we are going to use the word vertice instead of a point or corner. Take a look at what we came up with!
We are really happy to have Mark back in our class. Welcome back! Tomorrow we will be having our Winter Play Day. Please bring extra socks and mittens as they might get WET!
Unfortunately, Minto has been having trouble with their ice so they have cancelled our skating for February 26th. They will let us know if they will reschedule:)
Today, Ashton presented his Google Slides to the class! Well done, Ashton:)
Here is another Billy Goats Gruff production. Super job!
Well here are our Three Billy Goats Gruff videos...my Valentine's gift to everyone! Enjoy! One of the videos has accidentally 'disappeared'. We will have to retape next week...practice makes perfect!
Today we had an Ash Wednesday liturgy in the gym and made our own Lenten promises. Ask your child what their Lenten Promise is for the days leading up to Easter!
We watched a cute video today explaining what Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake Day) is all about. Enjoy!
In Language, we listened to the story 'A Bad Case of Stripes'. We had to use our visualization skills because we did not get to see the pictures. At three points in the story, we had to draw the image of the main character Camilla Cream. Later on, we got to see the book and compare our images to the story.
Please check our Twitter feed to see some awesome dancing!
Happy Chinese New Year! This is the year of the monkey. The monkey is the ninth in the 12 year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The Years of the Monkey include 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2015, 2028...
Today Mr. Kennedy's grade six class came to our class for buddy reading. Some of us tried out the Epic book site and posted our thoughts on a padlet. We decided that this site would make a great Literacy Station so stay tuned!
During Literacy Stations today, we had the opportunity to try and make an oragami boat using a procedural text. It was very hard to do! We ended up watching a video...it was still hard! Great growth mindset shown as no one quit:) Another group got to work on a google slideshow about Chinese New Year, They will be uploading their slideshows to their blogs when they are finished.
In Science, we had the liquid race between ketchup, mustard and syrup. We predicted which liquid would be the fastest. Most of us predicted that the syrup would win and...it DID! Some people chose syrup because it is a thinner liquid and would flow down the pan faster than the other two liquids.
