Simple Machine Toys

To conclude our Movement unit in Science, students got into groups to create a simple machine toy that included three simple machines.  After building the toy, they had to create a short video to show off their toy to the world.  Some students show a talent for selling things and may end up on the Shopping Network!  Dragon's Den...watch out!

Catholic Education Week


This week is the start of Catholic Education Week at St. Cecilia.  This afternoon, we had a liturgy in the gym and were introduced to the Syrian family that we helped during our Lenten Project.  Don't forget to drop by on Thursday morning (8 to 9 am) to check out what we have been up to in our class:)
In Science, we are working on creating a toy that uses three simple machines.  We created a success criteria together and broke up into our groups to discuss our toy.  Students were asked to sketch out their toy and write down the materials they will need to build it at school.  They are encouraged to use recycled materials like cereal boxes, plastic water bottles and paper towel/toilet paper holders. I can provide tape, glue (glue gun), string and fasteners! I can't wait to see the finished products.



In math we are exploring perimeter and used non-standard units of measurement to measure items in the classroom.

Earth Week and Simple Machine Toy Project

Here is a reminder of our Earth Week activities and colours to wear! Don't forget to wear GREEN tomorrow! During our Movement inquiry in Science, students had to use an app (iMovie, LEGO movie, Pic Collage or Explain Everything) to showcase their toy that incorporated three simple machines.  Each group member became an expert on one of the six simple machines.  Together, they collaborated to design and create a toy. Later this week, I will post the groups pitches to Dragon's Den:) See below for examples of their final presentations:
