Week 3 #GRA16

For the Global Read Aloud this week, we read the story Twenty Yawns about a child who was too wound up to get to sleep.  After reading the book, we shared our strategies/techniques for calming down after a busy or stressful day.  We will be sharing our techniques with other students who read Twenty Yawns.  It will be interesting to see if we have similar techniques! I found this interesting read about how Lauren Castillo designed the cover for the book.  You can read more about it here!

In Math, we are getting very good at rounding numbers to the nearest ten.  We played Rounding Scoot in math this morning and it got us up and moving!
In Gym, we played some Halloween themed games like Witch's Broom and Monster Tag.

Week 3 GRA16 and MORE!

Information was sent home with the oldest and only regarding our latest play structure fundraiser!
The prize includes riding the Zamboni, a Sens jersey and 4 tickets to a hockey game!
Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5.
Send in money and raffle tickets will be distributed. Thanks again for all your support!
Mr. Rodgers read the story of the Apple Star and we all got to eat an apple at the end.  Later, we taste tested 4 different kinds of apples: Empire, Spartan, Russett and McIntosh.  Which was your favourite?

For the Global Read Aloud this week, we read the book 'The Reader' by Amy Hest and illustrated by Lauren Castillo (our author study).

What a great story to use for visualization!  So many adjectives and description-you could really see what was happening in the story even if you didn't look at the pictures.  We explored the picture at the end of the book and wondered what the picture might be about.  Afterwards, we had to create a book trailer for one of our favourite books.  Some students tried our the green screen too!  We posted to our Seesaw accounts as well as a Padlet.
Later, we had a Mystery Google Hangout with other grade three classes.  Our first attempt did not go well due to camera problems.   Another group joined us after recess and we had to guess where they were from based on clues given by the students.  Turns out they were from St. Cecilia in Barrhaven,  Thanks again to Mrs. Brownrigg and Mrs. McCuen for our first Mystery Hangout. We gave them clues too!  We will definitely be having more hangouts...hopefully the computer camera will work then:)

Another Busy Friday!

#GRALauren
This week, we read 'The Troublemaker' by Lauren Castillo for the Global Read Aloud. We had lots of discussion about the art work and used clues from the text to predict what might happen in the story. Check out Lauren's blog here. Students were invited to bring their stuffies to school.  They had to write about what would happen if their own stuffy was 'coon napped' by the mischievous raccoon in the story. Take a look at what we came up with!

We finished up our Digital Citizenship posters and demonstrated how to be safe online.

In Math, we continue to work on representing and comparing numbers.  Students are encouraged to use the base ten blocks when working with numbers. This morning we had to figure out a solution to the following problem:

One possible solution (which met all the criteria) was 3 hundreds, 3 tens and 2 ones.

GRA and Be the Good News

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Enjoy time spent with your family and friends:)
This week for the Global Read Aloud we read the book 'Nana in the City'.  Students were asked to write about how a cape (like the one in the story) might make them brave.  Check out our padlet and our awesome writing!

Made with Padlet
We also finished our collaborative Google Slides presentation about how we can be the Good News like Jesus!

GRA

Today we read our first book from the Global Read Aloud 2016,  We are doing an author/illustrator study of Lauren Castillo.  The first book we read is called 'Nana in the City' about a young boy scared of the big, noisy city.  His grandma knits him a cape to confront his fears and he ends up loving the city!  Afterwards, we reflected on our own fears, shared them with the class and wrote about them using the template found here. Pictures to follow later this week!
You can find our more information about this exciting program here.
