Subtraction with Regrouping, Earth Week, Incredibox and Comparing Solids

Please bring in your plastic grocery bags.  St. Cecilia is competing in the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge. We will be counting up the bags we have collected and comparing the number with other classes. The collected bags will then be brought to the proper recycling depot. Thanks in advance!

In music we played around with Incredibox to compose some songs. A few of the students were able to share their music to Twitter and their blogs.  I am sure they would love you to comment on their compositions!
We continue to work on subtraction with regrouping using base ten.  Please continue to practice at home or online (there are many free games available!).  Today we compared two 3D figures to see how they are the same and how they are different.  We came up with a lot of ways to compare the two figures.  Well done!  We remembered to compare using geometric properties.

Narratives, Subtraction and Crystals!

Today we began to look at narratives and created an anchor chart to assist us when we are writing our own stories.  It looks a lot like a Shape Go Map that we used to retell a...story!  After watching the story 'The Plot Chickens', we discussed things that a narrative must have to be awesome! We remembered to include proper punctuation and add details to 'bump up' our writing.

In Math, we continue to focus on 2D geometry but we are also beginning to work on subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping.  We used base ten to help us and even got to write on our desks! Here is a great poem to help us remember when we have to 'borrow' a ten!
In Science, we created a solution using Borax (solid) and hot water (liquid).  We are hoping crystals will form on our 'snowflakes'.  Stay tuned! We also talked about solids that float and sink.  A new word was introduced...buoyancy (the ability of an object to float in water or air).  We discovered that not all solids float and a lot of them sink!

Quality Blog Comments, Subtracting and a Goat!

Displaying IMG_2437.JPGWe are working on writing comments on other students blogs.  Most of us are able to write simple comments that don't give the reader feedback.  We are going to try and write level 3 or level 4 comments. Please check out some of our blogs and write a quality comment. Don't forget to use the most important word (according to Mrs. Addison!) BECAUSE!
We have raised enough money in our class to buy a goat for a needy family in a third world country.  We are lucky to have such generous children in our class. We can still bring in money before the March Break and maybe we can buy a friend for our goat!Displaying PicCollage

Watch Liam explain how to subtract with regrouping.  He is very good at explaining his thinking!

Subtraction with Regrouping

We are learning to subtract with regrouping.  We know if there is more on the floor, we need to go next door (tens) and bring it over to the ones.  Then are top number will be bigger than the number on the bottom.  Here is a great video to help with our understanding,

Our two winners for the Gospel Value of Dignity of the Person are Averie and Jacob.  Well done!
The Gospel Value for the month of February is...LOVE.Displaying photo.JPG

Homework went home today in the yellow folder.  It will be due at the end of the month.  Please make sure it is neat and organized (easier to mark!).  A green duotang also went home.  Please take out the work in the duotang (you can keep that). You can check out the assessments that are stapled but please return them in the plastic folder.  Thanks again!
