Today we worked with a partner to solve an EQAO area question. We are getting better at answering questions thoroughly and showing our work. Here is the question we had to solve:
In Language, we created inferring photostories. Take a look at what we made. Can you figure out the correct story using your infering skills?

Our Week in Review
Thanks for all the donations to our Lenten Project this week-the Shepherd's of Good Hope.
We continue to work on perimeter in math and will be working on area next week.
Andrew tried out the Ozobots this week after creating a triangle with a perimeter of 34 cm.

In Language this week, we listened to the story 'The Giving Tree' by Shel Silverstein. Students were asked to infer what the tree represented in the story.
Here are their responses:
In writing, we are learning about how to do procedural writing. The teacher wrote a procedural text about how to get ready for a winter recess (yes...it's March but it is still COLD!).
Thanks to Sierra and Vincent for demonstrating how to properly get ready for recess!

On Friday, during the Holy Redeemer Earth Hour, we created freestanding structures using straws and tape (scissors as well!). Warren, Ben and Tomek were able to create a structure that was over 1 metre tall.
We also created Earth Hour ads to promote the one hour of lights off around the world!

Inferring and Blues in the Schools
This week marks the start of Lent and we will be collecting money for various charities. You will find the special Lenten activities planned at Holy Redeemer here.
One of my favourite reading strategies is inferring. Today we read the book "Tight Times" and had to use inferences to figure out what was happening throughout the text. We use our inferring skills all the time!
We are lucky to have Blues in the Schools visiting us this week at Holy Redeemer.

Week in Review
In Language, we continue to work on inferring and retelling stories. We watched the video "One Man Band" and stopped throughout the short film by Pixar to use our inferring skills.
Our read aloud for this week was Bear's Loose Tooth. After the reading, we completed a shared Shape Go Retell together.
In Math, we are working on reviewing time to the half hour and quarter hour. In Grade Three, we need to be able to tell time to the nearest five minutes.
Last week in Health, we worked on our Safety Posters. We had the choice of using Google Drawings or a poster using paper.
In Science, we finally finished our Forces unit with a fun STEM activity. Students had to create a safety device for their egg so that it would survive a 1m drop. We only had a few eggs that turned into omelettes. Hosanna suggested that we needed a slow motion edition of the Egg Drop Challenge video from the other day so...here it is!
Happy Birthday, Sayeda! She is our own February birthday.
I hope everyone has a great Family Day on Monday. Try and get outdoors to enjoy this beautiful weather!

We took to the outdoors for gym this week. The weather was glorious and we tried out the ice hills (who needs Jacques Cartier park?).

What We've Been Up To!
In Language, we investigated our Schema today (our background knowledge) and looked at how it helps us to infer. Using your schema + clues helps you to figure things out! We will be using this reading strategy to 'read between the lines'. Sometimes the author doesn't tell us everything and we need to figure it out by ourselves.
After gym, we played something I like to call The Inferring Game. A student had a feeling word placed on their back (so they could not see it) and we had to give them clues as to what their word might be. The student with the feeling on their back chose students to give them clues to the feeling. Some students used their bodies to give clues while others gave examples of the feeling to help the student guess their feeling. It is harder than it looks but we got better and better the more we practiced. Here are some examples!
I was amazed at the number of actors/actresses we have in our classroom! Well done, Grade Threes! We will continue the inferring game tomorrow...
In Math, we continue to look at pictographs and the 'Must Haves' or Success Criteria for creating a great graph. We are also working on adding numbers using efficient strategies that work for us ('W' strategy, algorithm, open number line). Every morning, we will be having a math 'warm up' with addition or subtraction questions/problems. We will be working on three-digit addition and subtraction soon. Using efficient strategies and mental math are ways to make us become faster at computations!

We created a pictograph about hair colour in our classroom. Here are the results of our survey!

Inferring with Pic Collage
We just love using the Pic Collage app! It is so versatile and easy to use. Yesterday, we uses an organizer to create an inferring photostory. Today we used Pic Collage (some students chose to use the green screen too) to turn our organizer into an actual photo story. You have to infer what is going on in the photos. You have three choices...A...B...or C. One of them is the correct choice and the others are false. Are you up for the challenge?
