Mid Week Post

Some students have asked me to post the Kahoots for them to play at home.  Here is the EQAO Kahoot we played a few days ago.  Have fun!
Next month, Holy Redeemer will be taking part in a Jump Rope for Heart event.  The kick off will begin with a video about skipping.  We began practicing our skipping skills today in gym class.  Not only is it a fun activity, it is also great exercise.  Take a peek at our moves in this short video!

Our procedural texts "How to Blow a Bubble" are up and the bubbles look awesome!

In preparation for Easter, we made adorable 'nests' for our chicks.  They look amazing and really cute!

Procedural Writing and Science

On Thursday, we made delicious mini pizzas and wrote procedural texts with a partner.  Lots of delicious fun!

On Friday, we listened to the story Nanabush and the Bridge- a traditional Anishinaabe folktale.  Using only a piece of paper, students had to create a bridge that could span 15 cm and help Nanabush get across.  All of the bridges were successful in being able to hold a load (Nanabush, his pack and his fish).  We discussed the various ways in which they were able to strengthen the paper.  Some groups used triangles and others folded the paper to make it stronger.  Layering the paper increased its strength too! Next week, we will continue to read Aboriginal stories and connect them to our science unit.

Students will 3.3 identify the strength of a structure as its ability to support a load; 3.6 describe ways in which the strength of different materials can be altered (e.g. by folding, adding layers, twisting/braiding, changing their shape); 3.7 describe ways to improve a structure’s strength (e.g. by using triangulation or cross-members) and stability (e.g. by lowering the centre of gravity)

Procedural Writing

Today, the class created a shared writing text-specifically a Procedural Text about a game we have played in gym.  Using Google Docs, we used our success criteria to create an example of a procedural text.  Check it out!

How to Make Hot Chocolate

Important Reminder:  Bring in money for White Elephant Sale on Friday! If you have any items in your basement collecting dust...we would appreciate them a lot!
Check out the promo video from last year here:)

Yesterday, we met with Mr. D and Mr. Armstrong's Grade 4 classes to create a 'How to' book about making hot chocolate.  First we went over the success criteria and watched (and took photos on the ipads) of Mr. D making yummy hot chocolate.  Next we wrote up a procedural writing entitled "How to Make Hot Chocolate".  When we finished this part of the work, we took our ipads and used the book creator app to make a book.  They turned out really well but the best part was drinking the delicious hot chocolate.  You can see our books if you visit our blogs here

Rubi added video and voice to her book!

Procedural Writing, the Water Cycle Song and Marshmallow Spaghetti Challenge 2.0

Today we talked about Mary and the Angel Gabriel telling her she would have a child named Jesus.  In writing, we continue to work on Procedural Writing. After watching a video about feeding chickadees, we wrote a piece of writing about 'How To Feed a Chickadee'.
Here is the video that prompted the writing!
Using our Procedural Writing anchor chart, the classes wrote a 'how to' piece about the video. We did a pretty good job! (Thanks Dawid for 'bumping up' our sentence).
We also listened to some great Water Cycle songs.  Take a look (and listen)!  Perhaps, our class will make their own music video:)

On Wednesday, we tried the Marshmallow Spaghetti Challenge again!  We learned a lot about building structures and character!

All About Sophia, Those Shoes and Procedural Writing

It was Sophia's turn for Student of the Week.  Check out her awesome Google Slideshow!

The other day we read a wonderful book called 'Those Shoes' and talked about wants vs. needs.  Many of us came to the conclusion that needing winter boots was a 'need' and getting an ipad was a 'want'.  Here is the book in video form:)

In writing, we have begun our Procedural Writing unit.  Ms. Ng and Mrs. Addison modeled how to write a recount about getting ready for recess.  Students co-created the anchor chart and the teachers wrote the piece of writing.  It was pretty good!

Procedural Writing

One of the Literacy Stations that the students visited this week was the Working with Teacher station where we looked at procedural writing.  We looked at the features of procedural writing (has a title 'How to...', steps to do the activity and pictures to help us understand) and used the Piccollage app to show how to organize the cloakroom. It can get quite messy and dangerous so everyone is encouraged to make sure it is neat.  Hopefully, we will have neat and tidy cloakrooms after we have finished our piccollages!
