Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a relaxing break and is ready to take on term two!
Yesterday your son/daughter brought home the new homework for our classes.  Please read it over together.  You can find a copy here if it has been misplaced:) The intention of the new homework is to give students more choice (like we do in class) and is meant to work around busy schedules.  If you wish to continue the old program with the word wall words, please let me know and I will provide you with a copy.  The students were excited to change up the homework program and work on things that interest them (or areas they need to work on).
In math we have finished up our 2D geometry unit and have begun 3D geometry.  At the start of each day we have a math task to complete.  It might be a brain buster or work in our daily math duotang. As well, we have been looking at images and discussing the 'math' we see in the picture.

We have also finished our Science unit and will launch our new unit (Movement) next week.
Each day, after last recess, we have something called 'Stamina' where we read whatever we want for a set period of time.  Take a look at some of the books we have been reading independently!

We have a special guest visiting our school tomorrow...Ryan from Ryan's Well!
We raised a lot of money for this great local charity!

Ryan's Well, Mathletics and Shamrock Shenanigans

On Tuesday, we made a video to share our Lenten Project with the world.  We have raised so much money and it looks like we will be able to help Ryan build another well.  On Friday, we are going to dress in our team colour of yellow. Thanks again for all the money so far:)
Today, we logged into our Mathletics account for the first time.  Students can access through sce.ocsb.ca student portal or simply go to mathletics.com.  Password information was glued into the front of the agenda so students can work on it from home as well as school.
In Language, we imagined what it would be like to grab a pot of gold from a leprechaun.  What would we do? Where would we go?  We green screened our ideas and posted to the padlet below.  So much fun!

Using Padlet to Show our Learning

Today we went on a 2D scavenger hunt around the school. We posted to our blogs as well as a padlet wall.  Tomorrow we will consolidate and discuss the shapes that we found.  I wonder if we remember the names of shapes from grade one?

We also did an experiment in science where we mixed liquids together with water.  Can you guess which liquid did NOT mix well with water?  I will give you a clue:  It spilled on the floor and left a greasy mess!

Global Read Aloud

Today we began our Global Read Aloud adventure with the story 'Chopsticks'.  Our author study will be all about Amy Krouse Rosenthal. We predicted what the story might be about before seeing the cover. After Mrs. A took off the cover to show the artwork on the cover, we made new predictions about what the book was about. It really was a book about friendship and not being afraid to take a break, trying new things. The class thoroughly enjoyed the book and its witty play on words ("whisked away" by a real wisk). The author of the book favourited our tweet about how much we enjoyed the story.  COOL!

We also discussed what the author's message might have been.  We continue to post on our GRA Padlet each day.  Tomorrow, we will attempt to use real chopsticks (Thanks, Mrs. Lee!). Rubi said she would bring her own chopsticks into school to show us how it is done. A class in Michigan has even contributed to our padlet post! Check out our twitter conversation below!

Making Connections, Adjectives, Michigan and Turkey Tag

Today we practiced our doubles in math (1-5 and 6-10).  We also were given a math problem to solve with a partner.  There were lots of strategies to solve the question and we will share them tomorrow.

Mrs. Mastin's class in Michigan was able to prove their answer using base ten.  They tweeted their answer to us.  Take a peek!

In Language, we continue to work on connections and adjectives.  We read the story "Wemberly Worried" and students made lots of text to self connections.

Our Making Connections padlet keeps growing...

We listened to the story 'The Very Cranky Bear' and created an adjective anchor chart about adjectives.

We have been looking at adjectives and how they make our writing more descriptive.  Students had the opportunity to explore the Popplet app with a friend.  They had to think of a noun and brainstorm as many adjectives as they could to describe the noun. Many chose to describe their friend (we had modelled an example with Mrs. Lee) and below you will find some good examples.  Enjoy!

In gym, we played turkey tag...ask your child how to play it!

Water Conservation Gamis

In December, when students were at the writing station, they had to think of some ideas of how to save water.  After, they practiced using the Tellegami app at the technology station.  Finally, they had to create their gami and record their 'Ways to Save Water' ideas.  I finally got around to uploading them to a padlet. Take a look and a listen at our gamis below and please leave a comment!

Padlet and QR Codes

Today, we used the ipads and QR codes to connect to a padlet on water.  Students use padlet to write what they knew about water. We had some technical difficulties (wi-fi!) but most of us got to share our learning.  If you want, you can add to our padlet board:)
