Week of Inspirational Math

This morning we began our Week of Inspirational Math by looking quickly at a dot card,  Most students recognized that it added up to 6.  We learned that our brains grow and change and that there is no such thing as a 'math brain'. Many of us visualized the dots differently and that is okay! Our hope is that students will see math as creative and visual (not just numbers!).  We will continue our journey over the next few days:) You can find more information about Inspiring Math here.

We watched a video about math brains and how everyone does indeed have one! Before embarking on a group activity, the class created the following anchor chart about what a successful math group would look and sound like:

Save Fred!

Today we had the opportunity to work with Mr. C's class to save Fred.  Who is Fred?  Well...he is a very unlucky worm who refused to wear his life jacket!  We had to figure out a way to get his life jacket on without dropping him in the 'water'.  The rules were simple: No hands! Working together in groups of three, we persevered and most groups were successful and no worms were harmed in the process!  Take a peek at us in action at Holy Redeemer:)

Phew!!

Important reminders: Two more notes went home today. Please sign and return them tomorrow.  If you have not returned the other notes please do so as well! Thank you in advance!
It is hard to believe that it will be Friday tomorrow!  We have been settling into cottage life (aka our classhome).  We are learning about flexible seating and making good choices as to where we should sit to do our best work,  Reading books and getting to know you activities have been the primary focus this week.  Also, we have been learning about routines in our class.  Living in a portable comes with a few more expectations.
Students had to use their math skills to figure me out today. They were given the opportunity to create one as well to share with the class.  Can YOU figure me out?

Today we read 'The Important Book' and worked on our kites that let everyone know what makes us unique.  As well, we read the book 'Two' after reading the book 'One' yesterday.  We are quickly making new friends and working as a team to keep our cottage running smoothly.  The kids are to be commended for putting supplies away and tidying up at the end of the day.  Ask your child what their favourite 'flexible learning' space is!  They are encouraged to try a variety.  Tomorrow we will try to 'Save Fred'.  Wish us luck!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a new year of learning, exploring, discovering and creating!  My name is Mrs. Addison (aka Mrs. A) and I will be teaching at Holy Redeemer this year.  I previously taught at St.Cecilia, St. Stephen, St. Bernard and St. Gregory.  This will be my first 'Holy' school!
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6th at 8:30.  I am pretty sure I will not be able to sleep so I better get a large coffee to go:) Here is a peek at the September newsletter you will find in your child's agenda. You can also find the Holy Redeemer newsletter here!

When you enter the cottage (fancy word for 'portable'), you will notice something different.  There are no typical desks in rows but areas set up with different seating options.  Each student gets to choose where they learn best and it encourages them to get comfy. Who doesn't want to be comfortable at school?   Have a great long weekend and I am looking forward to meeting my new crop of MonSTARS on Tuesday!
